Why the Green Hummingbird?

Wangari Maathai told a story about a forest that was on fire and all of the animals stood around helpless and did nothing. A hummingbird flew to the nearest stream and took a drop of water. It put it on the fire, and went back and forth collecting water drop by drop. In the meantime all the other animals, much bigger animals like the elephant with a big trunk that could bring much more water, are standing there helpless. The other animals discouraged the hummingbird saying that he is too small and can only carry a drop of water at a time. He turns to them and says, ‘I am doing the best I can.’

Wangari Maathai taught us that no-one is too small to do their part, to speak up, to plant a tree...it can start small but it can grow so big. I want to be a green hummingbird and contribute my droplet to the fight to save our environment.
